Unveiling Iceland’s Secret Treasures – Beyond the Golden Circle

Iceland, with its otherworldly landscapes and captivating beauty, has always been a dream destination for adventurers seeking unique and unforgettable experiences. However, the country’s most iconic landmarks in the Golden Circle often steal the spotlight. For those eager to step off-the-beaten-path and delve into the heart of this Nordic wonderland, there are so many secret treasures waiting to be unveiled.

From remote fishing villages to dramatic fjords, and from ancient sagas to modern art scenes, join us as we showcase some of our favourite hidden gems in Iceland.

Choose Your Adventure on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Nestled along Iceland’s captivating western coast, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula emerges as a treasure trove of natural wonders and cultural heritage, beckoning adventurers with its diverse landscapes and rich history. At its heart lies the iconic snow-capped Snæfellsjökull volcano, which towers over the landscape and serves as the focal point of the region, immortalised in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth.

After being tendered ashore in a Zodiac, choose from a selection of shore excursions that suit a wide range of interests and fitness levels, including bus tours, invigorating hikes – picture yourself traversing a crater! – and exploration of mystical caves. Uncover the secrets of this enchanting region at your own pace, from the rugged coastline to the towering cliffs and beyond.

Látrabjarg Cliffs: Europe’s Avian Haven

Marvel at the awe-inspiring Látrabjarg cliffs, Europe’s largest bird cliff and Europe’s westernmost point, where seabirds find sanctuary amidst the sheer cliffs and crashing waves. Capture breathtaking views and witness diverse species including puffins, razorbill, fulmar and guillemot, creating an unforgettable spectacle against the backdrop of the North Atlantic.

Akureyri’s Geothermal Wonders

The geothermal region near Akureyri offers a unique opportunity to witness the dynamic interaction between volcanic processes and geothermal activity. This area draws travellers from all over the globe who want to experience, study and photograph its distinctive geological features, volcanic landscapes and geothermal activity.

Choose from a range of shore excursions that will help you experience the raw nature of this unique region, including soaking in hot springs surrounded by mountain views, marvelling at Goðafoss Falls – one of the biggest and most picturesque waterfalls in Iceland – and hiking otherworldly landscapes with your camera glued to your hand.

Unveil the Charms of Seydisfjörður

Nestled in the Eastern Region of Iceland, Seyðisfjörður is surrounded by majestic mountains and a tranquil fjord, Seyðisfjörður is a haven of unparalleled natural beauty that is best explored on foot.

Admire the charming colourful wooden buildings that it is renowned for, before wandering at your own pace through its quaint streets, immersing yourself in the vibrant arts scene and observing the fusion of creativity with the breathtaking natural surroundings.

The 'Alps of the Westfjords’

Venture into the heart of the Westfjords to the quaint but culturally rich village of Thingeyri, nestled in one of Iceland’s most picturesque fjords, against a backdrop of postcard-perfect towering mountains. Explore the hidden gem of Dynjandi, a series of stunning waterfalls, and absorb the dramatic scenery that sets this region apart as one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets.

Then, step back in time and engage with the rich history of the Vikings at an interactive Viking Museum, that is a recreation of the original village used by settlers in the Thingeyri region. Delve into the Norse sagas, learn about their seafaring exploits, get hands-on with Viking artifacts and gain unique insights into Iceland’s fascinating past.

Discover Tales of Witchcraft in Hólmavík

From Vikings to witches! Embark on a cultural journey through Icelandic folklore at the Witch and Sorcery Museum in the small town of Hólmavík. This must-visit museum brings the 17th-century witch craze in Iceland to life through dark and dramatic tales that will have you holding on to your expedition buddy. In addition to learning about specific historical cases, find out more about different types of witchcraft, from using sorcery to attract money to bringing the dead back to life.

For another quirky one-of-a-kind experience, head to the neighbouring small town of Djúpavík to explore an abandoned herring museum that’s been transformed into an art gallery.

Kayakers should embrace the opportunity to paddle amidst the enchanting waters surrounding these towns, while keen hikers can enjoy walks of varying levels of difficulty through the stunning surrounds, blending history and adventure in perfect harmony.

Cross the Arctic Circle

Depending on which Arctic voyage you choose, you may have the opportunity to cross the Arctic Circle as you cruise north from Iceland towards Jan Mayen and Svalbard. But did you know that you can cross this imaginary line without leaving Iceland?

Situated roughly 40 km (25 miles) away from the mainland, Grímsey is a lush, grass-covered island that is intersected by the Arctic Circle. Because of this, many travellers make their way to Grímsey so they can boast about having crossed this imaginary line. With around 100 residents, it offers a tranquil setting for activities like Zodiac cruising, kayaking and capturing stunning photographs of diverse seabirds.

Whether aboard one of our small, purpose-built expedition ships or standing on the northernmost part of Iceland, crossing the Arctic Circle is an experience that will stay with you forever.
