The weather in Scotland is not as extreme when compared with our polar voyages. However, it is notoriously changeable, and on our voyage, we will visit Scotland’s northern and western extremes. The west coast of Scotland is swept by the Gulf Stream so the climate is mild and moist, with average summer highs of around 19°C.

The Shetland Islands are typically cooler, around 9-13°C in July. The weather may be gloriously warm and sunny, but rain and wind are also common at any time.

Some of the outer Scottish islands can experience the full brunt of Atlantic storms. Though we have plenty of options to tailor our itinerary to the weather and choose more sheltered sports for landings when appropriate. The weather can change rapidly, so you should always carry a waterproof jacket when exploring ashore.

Each passenger aboard our Scottish expeditions will receive an expedition jacket when you board the ship. Designed exclusively for AE Expeditions, the 3-in-1 jacket offers sophisticated expedition-styling and both the inner and outer jacket include all of the important features for travelling to the polar regions, complete with an included ‘drop seat’ allowing for additional comfort when sitting in Zodiacs.
