Discover Iceland on a self-drive journey, taking in breathtaking fjords, lakes, glaciers, waterfalls and icebergs while staying in typical Icelandic villages

Day 1 – Keflavik > Hveragerði

Pick up your car at the Keflavik International airport and start your Iceland self-drive adventure! Drive down the southern coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula towards the charming village of Hveragerði for your first overnight stay. The village is one of the few sites in the world located directly on top of a geothermal area and because of its many green houses heated by hot water from nearby springs, it is often called the flower village.

Overnight: Hveragerði area

Day 2 – Hveragerði, Geysir, Thingvellir & Borgarfjorður (B)

Drive to the Gullfoss Waterfall and the hot springs at Geysir. Visit Thingvellir National Park, site of the ancient Icelandic Parliament, before driving through Hvalfjorður Fjord or Kaldiðalur highland pass (4WD needed) to Borgarfjorður.

Overnight: Borgarfjorður area

Day 3 – Borgarfjorður, Blonduos, Varmahlid & Akureyri (B)

Drive north through Borgarfjorður to the shores of Hunafloi Bay and the towering mountains and horse breeding valley of Skagafjorður. Continue onto Akureyri, the capital of the north.

Overnight: Akureyri area

Day 4 – Akureyri & Lake Mỳvatn (B)

Spend the morning exploring the town of Akureyri. Continue your journey to the unique Lake Mỳvatn.

Overnight: Lake Mỳrvatn area

Day 5 – Lake Mỳvatn (B)

Explore the natural wonders of Lake Mỳvtn and surrounding area, including the mystical lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Visit the volcanic area of Krafla along with the colourful sulfurous slopes of Namaskard pass.

Overnight: Lake Mỳrvatn area

Day 6 – Husavik, Tjornes, Dettifoss & Egilsstaðir (B)

Drive north to the fishing port of Husavik and around Tjornes Peninsula. Visit Asbyrgi, a magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon and Jokulsargljufur National Park. Proceed to the mighty Dettifoss Waterfall, before heading across the highland plateau to Egilsstaðir in the East.

Overnight: Egilsstaðir area

Day 7 – Reydarfjordur, Stodvarfjordur, Djupivogur & Höfn (B)

Drive south through the spectacular East Fjords, where towering mountains plunge vertically into the ocean. Your journey continues on to the town of Höfn in Hornafjorður, also known as the lobster capital of northern Europe.

Overnight: Höfn area

Day 8 – Höfn, Skaftafell & Kirkjubæjarklaustur (B)

Drive to the shimmering icebergs and still, milky waters of Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon before continuing to Skaftafell National Park where a nature hike is recommended. Continue on to the picturesque village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Overnight: Kirkjuvæjarklaustrur area

Day 9 – Vik, Skogar & Reykjavik (B)

On your way back to Reykjavik, drive along the spectacular south coast, a sweeping landscape of sandy deserts, rocky shores and rolling farmland sandwiched between snow-capped glaciers, mountains and the ocean.

Overnight: Reykjavik

Day 10 – Departure (B)

Drive back to Keflavik International Airport to return your car. Stop at the famous Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa on your way.
